A Study on the Attitude toward Death



Abstract
The purpose of this study was to find out the liccnccd nurses, student nurses and the patients attitudes toward death.
The subjects for the study were consisted of 277 cases i. e. 75 licenced nurses,HO student nurses, and 92 patients who were working and hospitalized in Won-Kwang University Hospital locared in Iri-city.
For this studs the author used own developed questionnaire using the schneidman and the data was collected from May 5th to July 30th, 1934 and it was statistically analized spss program using Chi-square and T-test.
The result obtained are as follows :
1. 60.6% of the total respondents answered they believe in the life after death, 34.3% doesn¢¥t and it shows significant difference between their religion(p < .05)
2. The youngest group who perceived about death was teenagers (62.1%) and the most feared group about death was 40s(17.3%), and then 50s(17.0%), 60s(14.4%). 53.0% of the respondents considered that death is as natural phenomena the end process of the life.
3. About the question for most frequent motivation for perceiving about death was the death of closely associated person (39.4%) and 69.3% of the respondents answered that they are thinking about death from time to time. 79.8% are talking about death with other people, 67.5% have their own philosophy about 59.2% answered that they want to be known the fact life and death, if they were diagnosed as hopeless case, for this question, nurses group showed more need (74.7%) than the patient group(42.4%) 44.8% of the total respondents answered they would accept death, 31.4% answered their own religion played only little role about influencing upon the formation of perception and attitude on death.
4. 83.8% of total respondents answered they would actively understand and help the patient on his bedside if they were to take care of a dying patient. The nures group answered about the question as for nursing activity for the dying patient should be : spiritual nurisng care (56.0%), physical care(30.7%), psychiatric care(13.3%), and then the student nurses group answered ; physical care(35.5%) psychiatric care(32.7%), spiritual care(31.8%). Most of the respondents answered that if a patient were hopeless, one must let him know the fact case by case(60.0%), 74.1% answered that when the patient knows the fact, they would help him to accept the death and to close his life.
5. Most of the respondents did not think of suicide very seriously and of the question about the method if they woyld admit it, it would be taking pills were most favorable(54.9%). 48.0% answerd that every sucide must be prevented and 22.0% answered that the society has no right to prevent it and nobody showed not hinder it.
